Come, From the Tale We’ve Long Believed in Let’s Now Rise

Updated: Dec 11, 2024

Come, let’s see through the ancient tale (or lie?),

That a big god lives somewhere high up in the sky,

A bigger version of man, perhaps gnarled and old,

Bearing on his head a great crown of gold,

And sporting on his face a long, white beard,

Being someone by us to be greatly feared,

Sitting majestically on an enormous throne,

From there governing the universe alone,

Reigning from on high, a stern cosmic king,

Despotically controlling every being and thing,

From up above ruling us creatures down here,

Demanding that before him we cringe in fear,

Surrounded by a vast winged fleet

Of angels prostrated humbly at his feet,

A god who’s said to have a single chosen religion,

'Saving' only some, sending the rest to perdition,

A god who's constantly putting us to the test

So that he can bless some of us and curse the rest,

A god intensely jealous and quick to get wild

At any infraction of his rules, even the most mild,

A god who's humourless, grim, grave and stern,

Who in hellfire his own children will gleefully burn,

A god who will to eternal hell readily send

Everyone who before him fails to bend.

In such a god I myself for long did believe,

A different god I then just couldn’t conceive,

Being conditioned this way from an early age,

But then, not long ago, I came to the stage

When I realised such a god just doesn't exist

(Even if for millions, the illusion does still persist),

And then I said to myself, ‘This ancient lore

I simply refuse to believe in anymore.’

Oh what horrors this tale has for so long wrought!

Oh the many wars that it has caused to be fought!

Oh the immense fear it has fomented, and the hate!

Oh the havoc it has played with humankind’s fate!

Come, let us now once and for all be relieved

Of this tale we’ve for long centuries believed,

Let us now this ancient story finally unlearn,

And the truth of the matter let us discern.

God is Existence, the Totality of what is, let's realise.

“All that exists is God”: So say the truly wise.

This means that every being and thing there is

Is simply a form or a manifestation of ‘His’.

And so, God isn’t just high up in the sky somewhere,

Rather, God is in all places; God is just everywhere.

God is seated in every single being and thing,

And not on a grand throne in the sky like a king.

It's God alone who dwells in all that we see,

Which means it's God who dwells in you and me.

Be it a bird or a human being, a tree or a stone,

Everything that exists is a form of God alone.

It's God who appears as the earth, moon and sun,

Other than God, there truly exists no one.

Come, from the tale we’ve long believed in let’s now rise,

And God as being all there is let us now finally realise!
