How to Accept Life and Live

By AiR (Atman in Ravi)

What is the right way to live?

Many people live in worry, in panic, in fear, in anxiety, in stress. They wonder, ‘Why did this happen to me?’, or ‘Why did that happen to my dear one?’

What, then, is the way to live without worry? There is only one way—and that is, the way of acceptance and surrender.

Many things that happen in our life are simply beyond our control. And so, we have to learn to accept them if we want to be at peace and live without constant worry. We, or someone dear to us, may fall seriously ill, for instance. We can—and should—do our best in such a situation, but can we do beyond our best? If we can’t, then why cry? If something is beyond our control even after we have done our best, then why be miserable? We have to learn to accept things that we have no control over.

We need to realize this simple truth that whatever is happening today is just a reaction of our own actions. Whatever is unfolding in our life today are our own actions coming back to us. It is Karma: as we sow, so shall we reap. When we realize this, we understand that this is not the result of fate, or bad luck or chance. When we realize that things happen as a result of our actions, past and present, we learn to accept things that we simply cannot control or do anything about.

People who don’t accept suffer. They experience misery of the mind. They are agonized by the ego. On the other hand, there are those who accept whatever happens, do the best they can, and surrender to what will be. They remain at peace.

Whatever will be will be. There are many things that we have no control over. Can we control everything that is going to happen in our life—even in the very next moment? No, we can’t! So, we should do our best, but beyond doing our best, we have to surrender the rest—to the Divine. People who don’t surrender to the Divine live in worry, anxiety and depression. People who do surrender, trust. They let go. They know that there is a God in charge, a God who loves us, a God who cares for us, who is kind and compassionate, who is fair. They trust in the Divine, in the Lord, and they surrender.

Therefore, what is the way to live today? If we really want to live in peace, bliss and joy, we need to accept whatever happens, do the best we can and surrender to whatever will be. We need to live in this moment, blissfully, peacefully. We need to count our blessings, not count our troubles. We need to live with gratitude. Of course, one may have problems—who doesn’t?—but we must know that we still have many blessings. There are others who suffer far more than us.

Remember, the secret to living happily is to accept and surrender. Accept the Divine Will as it unfolds, and surrender to whatever the Divine Will will be and you can be blissful and peaceful.

Finally, we all realize that death is certain. Every physical body has to die—and so, why cry? Death is solely in the hands of the Divine. If we reflect on our own life, we recognize that our birth and our death are both beyond our control. Where we were born, to whom we were born, when we were born—we did not decide any of these. We didn’t decide our parents, the country where we were born, our date of birth, our gender—we didn’t decide our birth itself! Likewise, it is not us who will decide our death. Death is decided by the Divine. So, why worry about death? If we learn to live with acceptance and surrender, we will be peaceful and blissful.
