However I’m Treated, Make Me Be…

Whether I’m loved or hated,

Spat upon or feted,

Blessed or denigrated,

Scorned or congratulated,

Cursed or praised,

Pushed down or raised,

Welcomed or rejected,

Mocked or respected,

Ignored or elevated,

Insulted or appreciated,

Rewarded or reviled

Honoured or shoved aside,

Whatever happens You well know,

So I’ve heard—they keep saying so.

Maybe all this I’ve myself earned,

Being my own actions to me returned.

Or, perhaps it’s Your will, Your decree.

If that’s so, then it’s the best for me,

In which case, then please make it be

That I’m unaffected by how they treat me,

Neither delighting in it nor driven sad,

Not judging it as either ‘good’ or ‘bad’,

But as just an event occurring only because

It simply had to as per Your cosmic laws

Or because You decreed that it be so,

The reason for which You alone know.

On my own, this I just can’t do,

Only You can do it, if You want to.

So, I request You, be it praise or blame,

To make me regard it as all the same.

However I’m treated, make me be

Always in a state of equanimity.
