What is the Source of Our Origin?

By AiR (Atman in Ravi)

The sight of a river flowing down from the snow-laden mountains is really beautiful. The river flows and it goes.

We know where the river comes from—from the snow-capped mountains—and we also know where the river finally goes—to the ocean. We know both the source of the river and its destination. But do we care to find out where our source and destination are? Do we know where we have come from, and where we will go, after death?

We think we were born on our birthday, but that is not true. In our present birth, we were alive nine months in our mothers’ womb before we were ‘delivered’.

What, then, was the beginning of this present life of ours? Two cells of our parents fused, and that fusion created a zygote. We already had the power of the Soul, and in that zygote was the Mind and Ego—ME—carrying its stock of previous karma. How we were born, in what circumstances we were born, was in accordance with the Law of Karma.

We human beings know the source of a river, but we don’t know our own source! Why are we born to a particular set of parents? How do we come alive? The zygote develops a body — the body develops around this zygote. The heart, the brain, the kidneys and other parts of the body begin to form, and when the child’s body is fully ready, it comes out into the world.

The child grows. It crawls, it walks, it runs. The child becomes an adult and eventually, the person becomes old. His body begins to decay, and then there is death. We all die. When we die, people cremate or bury our body—because it is not us. If the body were us, would they do that? No! Our own family, our own loved ones, burn or bury our body and say that we ‘passed away’.

We know that the river will go to the ocean. We know its destination. But what is our destination? Where will we go after we die? Do we have any idea at all? Do we bother to inquire? We are lost in the rush and gush of the river of life and we don’t know our source and our destination. Very few of us go on a quest to find out. Very few overcome ignorance and realize the truth—that we are not this body, we are not the mind, we are not the ego: we are the Divine Soul.

When we achieve this goal and we realize that we are the Soul, we are liberated. There is no more death and birth. We are united with the Divine. This is self-realization. This is God-realization.

When will we stop and search, to find the Source of our existence, to discover that we are manifestations of Divine energy? When will we realize that our destination is to go back to God, because that’s where we have come from?
